Guide For Water Filters During An Emergency

Water Filters

During an emergency, you will definitely need a source of clean water. Once you can find
water, you will then need to ensure that it is potable. One way to make water drinkable is to
use water filters. These filters are actually quite affordable and relatively light which can
help make sure that drinking water is always available. We will now look at a couple
different types of water filters.

Pump Filters

One of the most popular ways to filter and treat water is to use a pump filter. It is
basically a unit that is placed into the water and a hose is connected to it on one side and
the other side is connected to the actual filter and pump. Many of these filters come with a
pre-filter which can help to get rid of any sediments before the water goes through the
filter which increases the life span of the filter.

So, all you need to do is put one end into the water and the other end into the cup, bucket
or bottle which you would like to have clean water in. Once this is placed, you can commence
pumping. There are some pumps which are simpler to handle as oppose to others, so your
particular experience depends on the pump you use. You should continue pumping until your
container is filled and then you can seal it. Then, remove the filter components from your
water source and allow each one of the parts to completely dry before packing. Pumps are one
of the best option when you’re trying to filter water from a shallow source.

Chemical Water Filters

Another excellent way to treat water is to use chemicals. This particular method requires the
least amount of effort. All you need to do is fill water into a container or bottle and then
add one or more tablets and allow some time to pass. The most difficult part of this process
is waiting and it depends on how large your bottle is as well as the type and condition of
the water in the bottle. You can expect to wait as little as 30 minutes to over 4 hours.

Chemicals are one of easiest ways to treat water and purify it but it is not the best method
if you need drinkable water in a hurry. You should only use this method as a back up plan.

Gravity Filters

The next method that we will look at to treat water is to use gravity filters which is
actually very effective. Using gravity filters is quite effortless since you will be using
the power of gravity to filter the water. Basically, with these filters, there is a hose
connecting two reservoirs on each end and there is a filter in the middle or even at the end
of one reservoir.

The key with this filter is to find a large body of water that is sufficient to fill your
reservoir. You will not be able to use a small body of water such as a puddle but a stream or
lake will work. You will need to fill up your reservoir by moving it in a sweeping motion
under the water and then you can seal it when it is filled. You will have to locate a tree or
branch to secure the reservoir. There, gravity will work to drain the water in the top part
of the reservoir through a filter, into the bottom reservoir. It will take about 30 minutes
and this is a very efficient and effort free method to treat water.

Bottle Filters

Another fast method to treat water is to use a bottle filter. This is basically a bottle
which has a lid with an inbuilt water filter. So, all you need to do is fill up the bottle
from any water source. Then, as you drink the water, the water in the bottle will go through
the filter and be cleaned. Bottle filters are usually a bit heavier than other filters and
with this particular method, you are limited by the size of the bottle and it is only good
for personal use.

Boiling

Next, another way to treat water that is actually quite old school is boiling it. Basically,
all you have to do is gather water from the water source and put it to boil for a minute.
This is a very easy and fast method. The disadvantage of this is that you will not be able to
immediately drink the boiled water and will need to wait for it to cool down so you don’t
burn your throat.

Wrap Up

As you can see, there are numerous methods to treat water and filter it. So, it is best to
learn all the different ways you can treat water so you can choose the right one according to
your situation.
